Lionel Prevost (1935-2002) aka Lionel Torrence, grande e misconosciuto tenorsassofonista della Louisiana attivo soprattutto negli anni 1950/1960, dapprima componente nella road band di Clifton Chenier, e in studio con lui per Specialty e Argo/Checker (Chess). Dai tardi anni 1950 fu nella studio band di J.D. Miller, accompagnando gli artisti swamp blues e swamp pop, come Lonesome Sundown, Lazy Lester, Guitar Gable, Katie Webster, Warren Storm, Bobby Charles, Johnnie Allen. Ha infuso il suo caldo e ricco suono anche nei dischi di Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown, T Bone Walker, Etta James, Fats Domino, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Clarence Garlow, e altri. Registrò come solista per Zynn, una delle etichette di Miller (avendo successo con il disco strumentale Rooty Tooty / Moscow Twist), e su Excello.
Harry Simoneaux, altro sassofonista nello studio di Miller, nel libro di John Broven (South to Louisiana, 1987) ha lasciato questo ricordo di Lionel Prevost:
“Lionel was fantastic in any key! His horn was a sight to behold, he always had more rubber bands holding it together than you could count. Perhaps that enhanced the beauty of his art. A magnificent musician and a wonderful person, he was open to any suggestion at a session and always quiet – he let his horn do the talking. It’s a shame that such a talent was not more widely recognized. It was an honor to play with him, and my one regret is that we were never able to play together on a dance job. That would have been great! I hear Lionel may still be in Port Arthur, Texas. I hope he’s still playing and perhaps influencing some younger musicians.”
